 A little history...

On May 4th, 1995, the Prime Minister officially unveiled the Government of Quebec's website on the Internet. Then, on August 2nd, 1995, the government of Quebec instituted the "Secrétariat de l'inforoute de l'information" where the mandate was to ensure the operation of Inforoute.

According to the terms adopted, "l'Inforoute de l'information" was to, among other things, ensure    the diffusion of Québec abroad, and the economic and regional development of Québec. With this in mind, the Ministry of Education needed to find a way to put this tool in the hands of students and teachers, and to provide them with adequate subject material. This could not be done by the Ministry without a network of collaborators.

This is how, in January 1996 during the the socio-economique conference on information and communication technologies (NTIC), the Direction générale de la formation professionnelle et technique (DGFPT) -- since renamed the Secteur de la formation professionnelle et technique et de la formation continue (SFPTFC) -- persued the implementation of Inforoute de la formation professionnelle et technique (FPT) on the Internet, with the goal of improving the use of information and communication technologies within the training sector, so important for the development of a modern Québec. This site must at the same time collect and diffuse information. The educational network and their partners in vocational and technical training would be able to find pertinent expertise, products and services at their disposal.

The work achieved during 1995-1996 for the establishment of Inforoute FPT has been able to deliver certain products and services to targeted clientel - namely school boards, colleges, the DGFPT and partners in vocational and technical training. All of this was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Centre d'enrichissement de la micro-informatique scolaire (CEMIS) of the Commission scolaire Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu -- since renamed the Réseau de personnes-ressources pour le développement des compétences des élèves par l'intégration des technologies (RÉCIT) --  and the support of the Société GRICS.

Throughout 1996-1997, Inforoute FPT's representative and administrative structures changed, resulting in Inforoute FPT becoming an independant entity through partnerships with the "CEMIS de la Commission scolaire Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu", the"Vitrine APO" of collège de Bois-de-Boulogne and the Ministry of Education. Regional support from users and partners had already been established. In it's third year, Inforoute FPT was responsible for it's own financing through sponsorships, the sale of certain products and services, memberships and subsidies.

Contributions from the Ministry in 1996-1997 allowed for the set up and organization ofInforoute FPT and the construction and maintenance of their web pages for DGFPT activities (those related to programs of study as well as dossiers such as the Work-Study Program, le Régime d'apprentissage, la Carte des enseignements, etc.). This budget was deemed to be used to develop educational material and to provide training sessions for teachers and other users. Among other things, keeping in mind their world-wide influence, the VTT Skills Competitions would eventually benefit at the 1996 edition of the Québec games held in Montréal as well as the World Skills Competition in 1999, also held in Montréal.

In 2001, according to the results obtained, the adjunct minister of Education responsible for vocational and technical training asked the Secrétariat des Olympiades to take over the management of'Inforoute FPT. This also regulated the legal status of the organization that was in place.

Then, on November 1st, 2001, the Secrétariat des Olympiades and Inforoute FPT joined together to further enlarge the organization that operates under Compétences Québec. Each team continues to work within the capacity for which they were put in place. The common areas are mainly management, communications, financial administration and production.

Inforoute FPT today...

L'Inforoute FPT has become THE website for Vocational and Technical Training (VTT) in Québec. This mega site holds many MEQ dossiers and offers several products and services directly related to education and employment. It also allows for interaction among contributors in vocational and technical training.

You can mainly find information on vocational and technical training programs, such as program content and admission conditions. You can also find an educational establishment's coodinates that offers different programs. For those who wish to employ it, there is a management system for places available within a program that is offered to establishments who are members of the special services section of Inforoute FPT.

A VTT Directory groups together main VTT contributors. Discussion forums for each training sector are also available, as well as a multitude of links in relation to VTT are available on the site.

All the main MEQ dossiers (Work-study, Tax Credit, Top 50, etc.) are on the site and kept up to date by the MEQ Sector representatives .

MEQ publications, such as programs, sector outlines, preliminary studies, job situation analysis, TAPs, etc. are submitted to the site regularly and can be downloaded in PDF format.

Secondary-level studens in the Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière-Appalaches regions may even submit their applications by Internet thanks to our Système régional d'admission en formation professionnelle (SRAFP). This system will soon be available in other regions.

Virtual Visits are also available. They are an important tool in considering a carreer choice or redirection. You can visit school life and job life in 3D. You may also see students in different phases if learning, hear their comments as well as comments from people already in the field. With a peripheral of 360 degrees, the visitor can go at their own pace and with their own interests in a real training centre or work place. By pointing at individuals or various equipment or appliances, you may also initiate an interaction that uses different media types such as text, images, sound, video or other Internet links.

There are sections specifically developed for students and for businesses. All of the files concerning these two categories have been grouped together.

The Reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences website (RAC) allows you to create a dossier asking for recognition of prior learning online. The materials used to recognize and assign prior learning is currently under development and new programs are being added to the existing list as the tools become available.

Constantly evolving, the Inforoute FPT website remains an excellent reference tool in the vocational and technical training field.
